IS HOME IMPROVEMENT A HOBBY?

Recently I was asked what the husband and I did for fun as a hobby. I was like ummm.??????? Meanwhile in my head I went though all the things other people talk about:

  • Tennis, Biking, other sporting things: Nope we aren't sporty.
  • Running:  Hahahaha Definitely not, that's not fun.
  • Football American or otherwise: No team sports here, we aren't raging football fans the fall is for coffee and sweaters.
  • Hiking: Nah it's just ok but only in perfect weather.

I came the conclusion that we are losers and have zero interests. After a few moments of abject horror I realized we do have a hobby, home improvement. But is home improvement a hobby? I mean we plan our weekends around house projects. We seriously go to Home Depot on date night and Sunday afternoons are Fixer Upper Sundays, the husband's personal fave. We've seen them all but we still watch them. I don't know who he has more of a crush on Chip or Joanna.... Chip, he wants to be Chip!

It was very apparent when recently we had to put in a new A.C. Unit and that hit the house budget hard. Boo! We haven't been able to do any projects for a few months. We've been in withdrawal. So bored, not really knowing what to do with ourselves. The husband and I went to Home Depot  for a new mailbox and we were way too excited to pick out a new mailbox. We keep admiring it, "oh that is a nice mailbox, yes it is."  I mean it's not designer shoes or a car, it's a mailbox but we couldn't wait to get home to put it up. Now we drive by going "that is so nice."  Seriously we didn't even landscape yet and we act like we built a new house, LOL. We are waiting until fall to plant something it is in full sun most of the day and it's hot, so it has to be tough to grow here. The old mailbox was falling over so it is really an improvement. Sorry no before pics just image a sad falling down plastic mailbox.

Yes it's giant we have dogs and our mailman doesn't do dogs. This can hold packages so yay amazon and spoonflower!

A recent painting of mine is the inspiration for a whole new home improvement project. The upstairs hallway bathroom. It is in desperate need of a makeover. It's been on our list since we moved in but way down at the bottom of the list. But now I have ideas so it has jumped to the top. It is currently a dark hole with zero personality. It's blah brown with ugly builder grade everything. I hate it.... I mean that really deep dark kinda hate! Check out the photos below you will understand.

My Bathroom now:

 Ugly floor and boring walls.

Why do they make these!?! Was this ever trendy?

Awful mirror and free standing toilet paper holder.

All of this just NO! So awful!

No natural light tiny dark and boring.  The only thing I like is my shower curtain, it's a Nate Berkus from Target. I picked it up years ago back when we had a sweet retro bathroom that had floor to ceiling turquoise tile with gold flakes. I still love it. I painted watercolor cactus and it matches perfectly with my shower curtain. So now I have to redo everything in this bathroom to match my cute painting and curtain right? Oh poo!  The only thing we can't replace is the shower that isn't in the budget can you $$$. I would love to tile the shower but for now that will have to wait. This little bathroom needs loads of help.

My inspiration:

Textures and color inspiration for my bathroom are hard wood and ceramic mixed with soft towels and watercolors. My 16 year old stepson is the main person that uses this bathroom so I have to keep it a little masculine and not childish. This is also our guest bathroom so I want it to be welcoming to guest. I don't want it to scream "TEENAGE BOY".

I haven't decided on the wall color yet I am torn between white, grey or beige. The room needs some character it's just so plain Jane. I am considering some sort of wall treatment like ship-lap or board and batten just something to add interest.

Well I have a starting point so I am off to find paint colors and counter top ideas and that means hours on Pinterest yay!
